Apple Shifts Focus Away from 27-Inch iMac in Favor of 24-Inch Model and Separate Solutions

In a recent announcement, Apple has confirmed that it will not be releasing an Apple Silicon version of the 27-inch iMac, which had been a staple in its desktop computer lineup for years. This decision follows the discontinuation of the Intel-equipped 27-inch iMac in 2022. Instead, Apple is concentrating on its 24-inch iMac, initially introduced in early 2021 and recently updated with the new M3 processor.

Apple's PR representative, Starlayne Meza, shared this strategic shift with The Verge. Apple is suggesting that those who had been hoping for a larger iMac should consider the Studio Display, Mac Studio, or Mac Mini, all of which pair a 27-inch 5K screen with a separate computer. This marks a departure from the traditional all-in-one design of the iMac.

The 27-inch iMac was long regarded as Apple's flagship consumer desktop computer, finding its place not only in homes and offices but also in the studios and editing bays of various media companies. However, since Apple never introduced a version with its in-house Apple Silicon processors, many professionals, including video editors and developers, transitioned to alternative machines such as the Mac Studio and MacBook Pro or more customizable desktop PCs.

The 24-inch iMac, featuring a 4.5K display, serves as a compromise between the older 21-inch 4K Intel models and the larger 27-inch 5K model. Nevertheless, it does not include Apple's most powerful processors, relying on base model chips. Although these base Apple Silicon processors outperform their older Intel counterparts, the absence of high-end chips and discrete GPUs means that users with a need for enhanced performance, particularly for GPU-intensive tasks, must consider other options outside Apple's current lineup.

The 27-inch iMac was known for its power user features, including a variety of ports and an SD card slot. In contrast, the current 24-inch iMac is limited to a maximum of four USB-C ports, offering a more streamlined but less versatile approach.

Apple's focus on the 24-inch iMac makes it clear that the company is positioning it primarily as a family computer or an aesthetically pleasing addition to retail stores and similar environments.

While Apple's current statement specifically addresses the 27-inch iMac, leaving room for speculation about a larger iMac in the future, it remains uncertain whether such a product will ever materialize. For now, the 24-inch iMac takes center stage in Apple's desktop lineup.
